WHAT IS A DOULA?

The Association of Ontario Doulas defines a doula as “..someone who provides non-clinical support and care to families during childbirth and the postpartum period.” Doulas are professionals who work to provide physical, emotional and educational support to pregnant people, their partners and new families. I like to think of a doula as your coach and professional best friend!

Birth doulas focus on supporting clients during pregnancy and labour by providing physical, emotional and educational support.

Postpartum doulas support families in the postpartum period as they transition to parenthood with practical help, emotional support and evidence-based care.

DOES A DOULA REPLACE A MIDWIFE, OB, NURSE OR OTHER CARE PROVIDER?

Doulas are non-clinical professionals, so no they do not replace your primary health care provider. Doulas are committed to working collaboratively as a member of your health care team.

WHEN SHOULD I HIRE A DOULA?

The choice is up to you and I say the sooner the better! That way, you’ll guarantee the doula’s availability for your expected delivery date. Some clients will hire a doula as soon as they learn they are pregnant and others make a last minute decision.

I HAVE A PARTNER WHO WILL ATTEND THE BIRTH WITH ME. DO I NEED A DOULA TOO?

Doulas can be a great support to partners too! A doula will work with both the birthing individual and partner to support them as they welcome a new baby (or babies!). Doulas can provide guidance, support, assistance and encouragement to partners as they support the birthing individual. A doula won’t replace your partner, but can come in and be a great addition to your team!
